Ashe College & Career Day

Multiple college access professionals in the High Country worked together this month to create and produce a successful event at Ashe County High School (ACHS).

During the recent ACHS College and Career Day, the whole school was involved, and every grade participated in multiple activities with no normal classes in session that school day. College Advising Corps Adviser, Baylee Smith; GEAR UP Coordinator, Karee Mackey; Wilkes Community College Career Coach, Jennifer Glass; and Career Development Coordinator, Diane Sprague were tasked with planning everything in place of a normal class day.

The morning started with a motivational speaker for all students, and then seniors participated in a board breaking activity.  The morning was set-up for grade level homeroom activities where every student wrote an elevator pitch about themselves, grades 9-11 completed a 4-year-plan, and 12th grade created FSA IDs. Then after lunch, students attended sessions of interest based on topics they found relevant. There were many guest speakers from businesses in the community to tell their story as to how they got where they are (if they needed college, etc) and many teachers were leading workshops. Some of the workshops included social media etiquette, 2-year vs 4-year institutions, how to search for scholarships, making the most out of a college visit, how to search for jobs/housing if you want to move, and more. Over 40 guest speakers from the community attended the event.

CAC Adviser, Baylee Smith said, “There was a lot put into this event, but I am so happy that we were able to pull it off with the support from teachers within our school and members from our community! Go Huskies!”.
