Information for Prospective Tutors
Upward Bound is an academic support program for high school students who are low-income or potential first-generation college graduates. The goal of Upward Bound is to help students improve their academic performance so that they can be accepted into and successful in college. Upward Bound provides services to approximately 80 students from four area high schools. Approximately 94% of Upward Bound graduates attend college.
Tutor Requirements -
- Attend all Upward Bound tutoring sessions (Tuesdays 4:00 - 6:30pm); see tentative calendar here
- Register for and attend US 3533 - section #101. Class meets Mondays from 4:00-4:50pm in D.D. Dougherty. Fall 2009 class begins Monday, September 14. Course website: http://us3533.wordpress.com/
- Submit a weekly journal entry
Tutor Qualifications -
- A minimum of a 2.75 GPA
- Ability to tutor high school students in at least two of the following subjects: Writing, Foreign Languages, Algebra I, Algebra II, Geometry, Adv. Math, Pre-Calc, Chemistry, US History, Biology, or Physics
Compensation -
- Volunteer hours for community service
- Tutor same student for the semester
- Earn one hour of college credit for US 3533
- Level 1 certification as a College Reading and Learning Association (CRLA) tutor
- Opportunity to qualify for paid tutoring positions
